Painted Lichen Moth
(Hypoprepia fucosa)
The Painted Lichen moth is from the moth family Erebidae. It has a very recognizable dark gray striped pattern on its gorgeous orange and yellow wings. These moths are very unique for having the ability to “hear” and produce high frequency sounds via a hearing organ located on their thorax. The wingspan of this moth is about 1-1.5 inches, making it a smaller sized species of moth.
This drawing was created using Prismacolor colored pencils. It is the second drawing chronologically in the Moth Series. This moth is in a resting position, making the insect seem a bit smaller than usual. The toned tan paper was cropped according to the shape of the insect. From to bottom of the drawing, it measures around 14 inches.
